A rooftop vegetable garden creates high-quality interaction between the families living there and other residents, making this a new generation of rental apartments.

Broote Yokohama Takashimadai is located adjacent to the old Tokaido Highway, in a rich natural environment with precious greenery in the surrounding area. Common areas such as a rooftop vegetable and herb garden, a licensed nursery, a kids' room, and a meeting room and lounge with a kitchen create quality interaction among children and residents. We are helping to create a new living environment for apartment complexes.

Project Summary

Broote Yokohama Takashimadai is a rental residence with a rooftop vegetable garden and garden in support of Yokohama City's biodiversity initiative, "Yokohama b Plan (Yokohama Action Plan for Biodiversity)".
In addition to the creation of green space, the project proposes a lifestyle and living environment in which green space is shared. The residents and their families can heal and nurture their own "greenery" to promote mutual communication and at the same time create a new lifestyle.

Our Approach

In addition to laying out a rooftop vegetable garden, Broote Yokohama Takashimadai has considered using it as a community space for residents. Events are held every other week throughout the year to support communication between families and residents. In addition, from the perspective of preserving the local environment, trees on the premises were planted with trees from the local area of Yokohama and Odawara along the former Tokaido Highway to promote biodiversity.

Point

Many vegetables and herbs are grown in the rooftop vegetable garden by residents and children from an attached daycare center. The rooftop vegetable garden is not only growing crops, but also nurturing a new community of people.
The vegetable garden is also the site of a workshop where residents can learn about nature, including flowers and other living creatures, from the green concierge (vegetable garden staff) assigned by Hakone Ueki, winner of the 2015 Kids Design Award.
